DIY Manhattan Kit: All You Need from A&J’s Liquor

Composition of glass bottle of whiskey near Manhattan cocktail served with pickled olive on stick on book

A Manhattan is a simple cocktail that lets the whiskey shine. It pairs a strong spirit with just enough sweetness and spice to make it feel like a warm hug on a cold evening.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz rye whiskey – look for something smooth but with enough bite, like a small‑batch Kentucky or an Irish rye if you prefer a softer profile.
  • 1 oz sweet vermouth – choose a classic French style that has a balance of herbs and sugar; the more it swirls in your glass, the richer the drink becomes.
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters – this is the tiny splash of spice that ties everything together; it’s worth taking the time to get the right brand.
  • Ice cubes or a large sphere for chilling and diluting gently.
  • A maraschino cherry for garnish (or, if you’re feeling adventurous, an orange twist).

Method

  1. Fill a mixing glass with plenty of ice. The cold will keep your cocktail from tasting too watered out before it’s served.

  2. Pour in the rye whiskey and sweet vermouth. Hold the measuring jigger at eye level—precision matters when you’re aiming for that classic balance.

  3. Add the two dashes of Angostura bitters. If you have a bit more or less, adjust to taste; the goal is subtle spice without overpowering the whiskey.

  4. Stir vigorously with a bar spoon for about 20–30 seconds. You want the drink to be chilled and slightly diluted, not just cold on the surface.

  5. Prepare your serving glass—an old‑fashioned or a coupe works nicely. Chill it first by filling it with ice while you finish stirring; that way the glass stays cool without too much dilution when you strain in.

  6. Strain the mixture into the chilled glass using a fine strainer to keep any tiny ice shards out.

  7. Squeeze an orange peel over the surface (if you’re using it) and drop it in for a citrusy aroma, then add your cherry as a final touch.

  8. Enjoy immediately. Take a sip, let the whiskey’s warmth rise, then watch how the vermouth’s sweetness lingers on the finish.

Serving & Tips

  • Whiskey choice matters. Rye gives that sharp, spicy edge everyone loves. Bourbon will soften it with vanilla notes. Try both over a week or two and see which feels like your hometown bar’s signature drink.
  • Adjust the vermouth. If you find the Manhattan too sweet, swap out half the sweet vermouth for dry vermouth; if it’s too dry, add a splash more of the sweet variety.
  • Use quality bitters. Angostura is standard, but experimenting with orange or Peychaud’s can give unique twists that still respect tradition.
  • Garnish thoughtfully. A cherry adds visual appeal and a hint of sweetness. An orange twist brings bright citrus oils to the nose; either works as long as you’re not overdoing it.
  • Keep the glass cool but dry. Over‑ice in the glass will dilute the cocktail before it even hits your lips, which is why we chill beforehand and strain out the ice.
  • Enjoy slowly. A Manhattan isn’t a shot; savor each sip like you’d taste a good story told over coffee. Let the flavors mingle before the next bite or breath.
